LEADER & SUPERVISOR: DEFINITIONS

Leader:  according to the World English Dictionary is a person who rules, guides, or inspires others. (Collins English dictionary). Also a leader is a conductor, a person who directs a military force or unit, a person who has commanding authority or influence, a first or principal performer of a group (2012 Merrriam-Webster, Incorporated). The business dictionary defined leader as a person or thing that holds a dominant or superior position within its field, and is able to exercise a high degree of control or influence over others. (2012 WebFinance, Inc), and Robbins & DeCenzo (2010) referred to a leader as anyone who can influence others.
            “PERSONAL POWER TO MANAGE PEOPLE”.
Leadership: The ability an individual demonstrates to influence other to act in a particular way through direction, encouragement, sensitivity, consideration, and support (Robbins & DeCenzo, 2010), the ability to lead, or the period during which a person occupies the position of leader according to World English Dictionary (Collins English Dictionary), Warren Bennis pointed that, “Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential.” (Teal Trust Charity); in the other hand, John C Maxwell said, “ leadership is influence –nothing more, nothing less.” Also he mentioned that the leadership is a process, not a position (Maxwell, 2011).
            “CONVINCE PEOPLE TO FOLLOW YOU”
Supervisor: a person who is appointed by the organization according to Robbins & DeCenzo

(2010), they said that the supervisor have legitimate power that allows them to reward and punish their employee, and the supervisor have the ability to influence the employee based on the formal authority inherent in their positions. We can define the supervisor as a person who supervises workers or the work done by other (Dictionary.com, LLC). John Reh describe the supervisor as responsible for the day-to-day performance of a small group, he said that the supervisor has experience in what the group does, but is not necessarily better than everyone he supervises, he guide the group toward its goals, see for team’s productivity, and resolve problems as they arise (Reh).
            “LAWFUL BOSS AT THE TIME”.
Supervision: The act or function of supervising (Dictionary.com Unabridge). “Supervision is an intervention that is provided by a senior member of a profession to a junior member or members of the same profession. This relationship is evaluative, extends over time, and has the simultaneous purposes of enhancing the professional functioning of the junior member, monitoring the quality of professional services offered to the clients…., and serving as a gatekeeper of those who are to enter the particular profession”, (Bernard & Goodyear, 1998). The Business dictionary defined supervision as monitoring and regulating of process, or delegated activities, responsibilities, or tasks. (2012 WebFinance, Inc).
            “MONITORING WHAT/HOW IS DONE”.
